Day 8: Awaiting A Ferry Ride to "the Rock" (e.g Newfoundland)

11/30/2014

Comments

So I decided to outfox myself and book reservations on the computer. You have to do each bike/person separately. Well that worked well and I got three confirmation numbers. And then the ferry company saw three "duplicates" and voided the other two. Since we promised Anoop we wouldn't leave him north of the border, off the ferry to see if we can't get these straightened out.

A ferry idiosyncrasies:

1) The ferry and the ports run on Newfoundland time (+1.5 hrs eastern)
2) The port office is only staffed 2 hrs prior to boat arrival
3) You cannot book reservations the day of the ferry, only standby
4) They only pre-book 75% of the ferry
5) For the morning crossing 24 vehicles made the stand-by cut. The remaining 10 vehicles were then confirmed for next ferry
6) If you don't have reservations, arrive as early as possible. There are two lines (one for reservations, and one for standby). Standby persons are given a number, and are moved onto the boat on a space-A status.
7) The phone line for reservations is only open 8-5/7 days a week.
8) The website is flaky, and clearly is not reliable based on our experience

The start of the ferry line..

Mostly, I felt like these birds fighting for a ferry ticket:

But we did get a nice to see the beginning of a Cod processing plant which is right next door:
